It's all about the car you drive too, I can't get insurance on a 330d BMW or a C250 or C320 Mercedes. They're looking 5k+ even tho those are the sort of cars I was driving before my ban but I was able to insure a GT TDI Golf for £450. Hope you haven't left a deposit on the sort of car that can't be insured after a driving ban.

Also not one company that specialises in convicted driver insurance was even able to come close to the prices I was getting on confused.com. That's just in my personal experience, it may be different for you.

Hi grice96 it's a Peugeot 207 so I'll keep ringing around

It's down to crash statistics too pal, if that particular model of 207 has been in a higher number of crashes then that affects the premium. Go onto eBay and look at a few cars you like and can see the reg on, use the reges to do quotes on confused.com and find what sort of car is cheapest for you.

A GT TDI 130 2003 golf came back £500 cheaper than anything else, but I also had 5 years of no claims bonus as it was protected at the time of my crash.

Just on the topic of insurance -

Can someone put my mind at rest about this.

I generally get the impression that vehicle insurance does go up but other convicted Drink Drivers I have chatted to in person have stated that overall there wasn't a massive hike in their premiums once they get their licences back.

Does age & driving experience get taken into account when getting insurance? I'm in my early 40s, with 20+ years driving prior to the conviction. I also have 10+ no claims (fortunately my arrest didn't involve a collision). I am a HRO which may affect this somehow.

Another convicted HRO told me recently, certain insurance companies will not touch you (Hastings got mentioned) but when he got back on the road his insurance cost wasn't that bad and he drives quite a flash motor. Again he is in his 40s with 20+ years driving under his belt prior to a two year HRO ban in 2017.

Can anyone clear this myth up for me?

I can only give you my own experience, none of the big insurance companies in NI cover you with an active DR10 so AXA NI, Allianz NI and Auto Line couldn't even provide me with quotes and I know some English companies do the same.

I couldn't get quotes under 5k on anything that I wanted to drive 335d/330d BMW, C250 or C320 Mercedes. I had drove a 335d and a C320 before my ban with no issues and the insurance was reasonable enough even with my age, 23. My 6 years no claims bonus was protected at the time of the crash so I was able to use it, I managed to get insurance on a GT TDI Golf for the same price I was paying for a C320 before my ban. A lot less of a car for the same price.
