Licence refused, how to prove no alcohol for a year?

Convicted Driver Insurance
My cdt test came back 1.0% but still refused they saying I am dependent how can I be with that score don't make sense carnt get hold of dvla what to do now how can I show evidence

They have refused you because the DVLA consider 1% as an indication of recent alcohol use, 1% is considered too high for someone they expect complete abstainence from. The normal green, orange and red CDT limits do not apply to those the DVLA deem to be dependent. They are looking for a score lower than 1%, generally around 0.7%.

The evidence the DVLA expect is a date of last drink logged with your GP and LFT's across the period returning results within the normal range. The DVLA do not tell you this is the evidence as they do not state what they do and do not want to avoid abuse of the system. LFT's and a last drink date backed by a GP is the only evidence they accept.

What I found with the DVLA is that they do change the goal post regularly on the CDT score. When I received my medical paperwork when I was re-instated with my licence in January, they stated the score had to be below 1.3% and I scored 0.9%.

My score of 0.9% was only 0.1% less than Kk13 has got. At the time of my HRO medical I had not consumed alcohol for 15 months!!! There are people on here who claim to have got CDT readings of 0.5% with just a few weeks of sobriety, which does p**s me off!!!

I still think 1.0% is a good score. The CDT system seems very robust and as we have discussed previously no living human being can reach 0.0%.

Another year of this I think it's just a joke they took my licence in 2018 q reading 1.0% how can they class that as been dependent on boozer so if I get the same next be bk to the beginning

Kk13

I've checked the DVLA legislation and to fall into the green category it states the driver has to have a reading of 1.6% or less to pass the CDT. However, like I said, I suspect the DVLA do move the goal posts on this as my CDT report set the benchmark at 1.3%.

1.0% does seem to be a 'tight' score to fall under. I do recall a forum member on here (I can't recall their name) once stated they got 1.0% on their CDT and they were reinstated with their licence.

I can only assume the DVLA have been quite strict with yourself.

I thought this was the traffic light system

A %CDT result below 1.7 suggests no recent excess alcohol intake.

A %CDT level result between 1.7 and 2.2 suggests recent excess alcohol intake.

A %CDT level result between 2.3 and 2.9 indicates regular
heavy amounts of alcohol consumption and can be an indication of increasing risk or higher risk drinking.

A %CDT result of 3 or more indicates regular excess amounts of alcohol consumption and can indicate alcohol dependence.

The above is so called the traffic light system, if they allow you to drive or not or if they ask questions to your doctor for more information. I put NO to everything on the questionaire.

Now here's the rub for you all, on the actual medical test by SYNLAB it states this, i think this is VERY important for all on here:

Classic CDT (%)
DVLA Green <1.3
DVLA Amber 1.3 - 1.6
DVLA Red >1.7

Hi everyone

I have recently had my license refused after being honest on my medical questionnaire by stating that I have a drink once or twice a week, within government guidelines, but like so many others here I had no idea I was to remain abstinent. There was no issue with my medical examination and my CDT% was 0.7.
I have never been convicted of any driving offence, however I did have a problem with alcohol about 5 years ago and a Dr reported it to the DVLA and I was deemed to be alcohol dependant.
I've never had a problem up until now with my medicals (2020 medical was cancelled due to covid) however I seen someone mention about changes the DVLA made back in early 2019, which meant that people must remain abstinent. Does anyone have a source or link to this information?
I have no issue with not drinking as my license is more important, just frustrating that I can't drive for at least a year now.
My concern is in proving evidence if my GP refuses to do the LFT every few months, where do I stand with this? Also if I am meant to get 4 over the year, when should I get the first one? If I get the 4th LFT at the end of month 12 should I wait until then before reapplying for my license? If I do that it means by the time the DVLA process everything, I go for medical, then ask my Dr for more information this likely adds another few months on.
Any advice would be appreciated, thanks.

There are no hard and fast rules. DVLA do not specifically ask for 4 LFT's, but it has been shown before that regular LFT's within 'normal' parameters or the levels moving in the right direction are proof enough for DVLA to make their decision from. If you ask DVLA how to prove abstinence, they will not give you a definitive answer. It may be that a report from the GP is sufficient, but then again it might not - that is why people have used the LFT's to help prove their case. Some may use 1 LFT, others 2, 3 or 4 within 12 months- it just depends on what DVLA decide is proof - frustrating I know!

Speak to your GP, explain what you are doing and ask for their help. Explain that regular LFT's are shown to help, and I'm sure they will back you up. Get a date of last drink registered with them, again this will help when reapplying.

People who have been classified as 'alcohol dependent' are expected to abstain from drinking completely FOR LIFE! In practice, this means abstaining for at least as long as you are subjected to annual DVLA medicals, which could be up to 6 years (or some people report even longer). Any mention of alcohol intake, even a small sherry at Grandma's at Christmas, will see your licence refused or revoked. Those classified as 'alcohol abusers' will be expected to abstain OR at least drink within the government guidelines for 6 months, however if they are subjected to the annual DVLA medical they will be expected to remain either abstinent or drinking within guidelines until their full 10 year licence is issued.

Hi BigTom

Thanks for the reply, I'll speak to my doctor and see what they can do to help. I have a feeling now that my license has been revoked again that this 6 year cycle of medicals will start all over, maybe never get out of their system.

Hi there. I recently had my medical and DVLA have written to me telling me i have to provide evidence that I have not had any alcohol for a year. I went to my doctors straight away and logged with then that I have stopped drinking and asked them to do regular testing. They refused to do this saying it’s not NHS work and to speak to the DVLA and ask them what to do. I phoned DVLA and they told me that they need regular testing and I have to provide the evidence??? I explained my doctor was reluctant to do this but they told me to ring the doctor and tell them to ring the DVLA and ask to speak to a doctor in the medical department to explain how to start providing the evidence. I phoned the doctor back, he’s still saying it’s private work but said he would call them.... NEXT THURSDAY!!! That’s another week gone by!!! I’m at my wits end here, how the hell do I prove my abstinence from alcohol?? I’m going to ring the DVLA tomorrow morning and ask to speak to a doctor myself, I can’t wait another week I want to get the ball rolling. Can anyone shed any light on how you prove to the DVLA you have been abstinent from alcohol for a year?
In my opinion its not good communication, period. If you need regular testing I'd suggest getting a referral to a organisation local to your council, because if they want proof of total abstinence for 12 months, I'll come straight to the point, it sounds like you have a alcohol dependent issue, if that's the case, think of your health first of all and not driving,,, you can't suddenly stop drinking, we all know that alcohol is the biggest killer when it comes to legal substances we do for pleasure, but if you have been told that you need monthly reports then a Drug and Alcohol service who do regular breathysers not CDT tests can be a vital part of getting your license and HEALTH back in good shape, I mean you may have just not adhered to abstinence , I know prob the football has had more in the pubs etc , but if the DVLA want your GP on board then they will write to him, he just sends his bill!! Good luck anyway, I'd love know how you managed get through to the HRO medical group, I've tried every morning with 2 phones and webchat with no success,,,,,

Hi, I have just gone a year without ANY alcohol, what I had to do is ask my doctor to send me relevant blood test forms and get them done, I also have a guy at the liver department at hospital I see.
His secretary and my doctor will get results, you then need to ask for a letter from the hospital specialist to go direct to you.
Send that to DVLA with licence application filled in with all details asked.
The DVLA will NOT accept your application without this or similar details.
Once they have gathered all the details they need a decision will be made.
I know this is a very long way of doing things, but it's the only way, at present applications will take longer due to Covid.
Hope this helps.

Not really the way it works as the DVLA normally contacts your GP directly but having bloods done over a 12 months period with a date for your last drink is the way to go.

The balls in your court m8, I if your determined to drive you'll go the extra mile N more, but I still think you need, even if you work a Drink And Drug detox programme on ya side, but they will have regular bloods done, so ya real LFT NOT CDT, so any damage you got a goal there as its easily put rite, esp when ya got time etc, but I'd demand an appointment with ya GP, period, so oh,, and Don't forget you are allowed a bus pass free as you've been refused licence. 12 months is jac, and It's July now, so Xmas seemed only 2 months back, so 12 will be ere soon

Section 88,,,,CAN anyone tell me, my ban was up 12 yrs before the 2013 section 88 refusal, and now A, the its not my 1st application, I have all my GP reports were done 16 months ago, and I had to cancel 2x, the 3rd was outta my hands, and I basically not a bus went near or train to this Dr's.
So that's part 1, it's my 2nd application, so never been refused, 12 years as I say since law changed, and and my GP has no concerns as do I, as I I don't drink, and seriously, I so health wise I'm fit, and I so how can goal posts changed when on paper I'm allowed section 88 even as a HRO, so my points and DUI won't even be on my license when I eventually get it,, and any advice admin pless???? e

S88 MAY apply to you, because your conviction was before June 2013.
Can you confirm exactly when you applied this time for your licence back?
Have you had any acknowledgement from DVLA?
What happened when you did not do your medical last year… what did DVLA say to you?
In 1999 were you just convicted of drink driving
or were there any other offences?
Has your GP said that he / she has no concerns about you driving? (You need to ask, not presume)
Short answers would be appreciated as I find it hard reading your lengthy posts!

I'd no issues with my gp, it's actually my 2nd app,,, 2001, I was 1 of 000"s who were in error sent license, I had to cancel 2 medicals with the SOAB Co I work for, and I my medical extended, which I as they'd recieved my GP reports back, 7th 08 2018, so my 3rd med cancelled through something as you said, but long posts it wud take, so (how many letters are we allowed,? I'd change the Web page design and get unlim bandwidth, but I've seen far longer than mine, I answer people politely but tend to get a sarcastic reply, so anyway, I'm just riding it out now, so I got my orig docs back 3 weeks ago, so that's a start, so 21 half yrs, so another 6 months won't hurt eh!
