Insurance Rip Off Companies

Convicted Driver Insurance

After getting my licence back a week or so ago and sorting out a car, I then went on the merry-go-round of getting reasonable insurance quotes for it.

I tried all the 'specialist' companies but they were coming up with figures as high as £3,500 per year, including the ones that advertise on this site.

I then plugged in all my relevant information into Compare The Market including my two DUI's (they are still live,) and the fact that I occasionally use the car for some private work.

Now I know Insurance is more art than science and that the algorithms take into account where you live, your age, how long you have been driving, type of car, annual mileage, etc. but to be honest, I was pleasantly surprised at the quotes I received back. (okay some were nuts at £9,000 a year.)

I was expecting to pay around £1,500 but the lowest one for me, which I have gone with, was £730 from a broker called RCIB. There were also a number of quotes from other companies that were not too far off that. And the underwriter seems to be Aviva.

I made sure I visited the providers website, triple checked they had recorded all my DUI offences then went through and bought the insurance.

So yes, I am sitting hoping they don't come back and say oops, sorry, we made a booboo and will need to cancel, but so far everything seems to be okay.

I pick the new car up tomorrow. It's a 5 year old Jaguar XF AWD, well I am 64. :D

As an aside, when I took it for a test drive I was worried that I would be rusty after not having driven anything for 2.5 years. But after 5 seconds it was as if I had never been out of a car. So to anyone wondering if they need some 'lessons' after being off the road for so long, I would say probably not, but then again I did pass my test 40 years ago.

I am not recommending them to anyone, but you can do a quote on their website, so I have included the link below.

Same boat, thinking the insurance company have made a mistake as my insurance is over 300£ cheaper than it was pre ban. I went with the cheapest and it was a company called Freedom to Drive

Well provided you have the insurance certificate (which I have,) and that you have been totally honest about everything re DUI's, how much you will drive etc. then as far as I am concerned, you are covered. Monies paid, no comeback, I even uploaded a licence check code for them when asked. I know they have 14 days to cancel the policy, but that's a risk I'm willing to take. I also lost 14 years of NCD because my ban was 27 months, so I am starting from scratch again.

I did opt for a whacking great £1,000 excess, but in the event I don't need it, that's a risk I'm willing to take.

I am also driving bang on the speed limit everywhere I go, which is really pissing off drivers behind me, but tough.

Well seeing as I've been back on the road 3 months already I guess I'm good! Forgot to mention the policy did come with a black box but it's fine because I see no need to break the speed limit, I'm never in a rush 🤣

Where did you find the company? The only Telematics quote I got was on Compare the market and that was £9,000 a year.

I lost all my no claims also, in total around 20 years. I was surprised how low the 0 no claims price was considering they always quote figures like 60% discount for 5 years or more...

My price last year was only a couple of hundred more than before my ban. This year was pretty much what I paid pre-ban. Renewal in July, perhaps even lower than I was paying before my ban????

Do you have the website address for Freedom To Drive? I can only find Freedom brokers and they are looking for £2,700.

Yes that's the one. Yikes, 1.6 on Google reviews 😬 never actually googled them before, I just went through compare the market, I'll most likely change when the year is up though

I went on confused, best quote was Sheila's wheels. £795 which I've took. That's £130 more than before DD with crash. They have just emailed to confirm my 8 yrs NCD is verified from insurance database. Happy days are here again.

@EmmaCharlotte1 you have recently been literally copying and pasting posts of others in the same chats, are you trying to reply but not successfully doing it? It seems to be older posts as well you are doing this on?

The best place to obtain quotes is on a comparison website. Don't go near specialists like the ones that pay for links on this site. Sorry, but they are simply ripping you off.

I had 2 live convictions in 2019 when I got my licence back and bought my car, a Jaguar XF AWD. On the comparison sites and putting in all the relevant details, I was obtaining quotes with zero NCD starting at around £700.

When you submit your details to the link above, all that happens is that a bunch of 'specialist' insurers get in touch and once you go through the process of proving your info, they come back with 'realistic' quotes of around £3,500 upwards.

I went with a company called RCIB and in the first year paid £730 fully comp for the Jag. The second year was a bit higher at about £880, but still way cheaper than so called specialists.

Personally I wouldn't waste my time with them again.
