DVLA Medical - Timescale

Convicted Driver Insurance
Hey everyone! I’ve never posted on here but this forum has been very helpful in the process so I thought I would share my experience on here.

I was banned from February 2019 - February 2021, I blew almost 90 so classified as HRO. I took the Iam drink driving course in March 2020. Which reduced my ban to July 2020. Advised no medicals because of Covid so didn’t rush with sending my application off

I sent my application off in September 2020. A lot of back of forth with forms from dvla/gp. I have a history of mental health, so had to declare medications, previous treatments etc. It wasn’t until about mid January 2021 I heard back from dvla to book my medical.

Unfortunately I pulled a short straw and the only medical they had was 8th February. I was a bit worried because from booking in my medical and the last time I had drink it would of given me a total of just over 2 weeks since my last drink. I was worried about passing but still went along to my appointment.

So they asked about when did I have a last drink, how often I drink etc etc. I told the truth. I drink every weekend/every other weekend and by the standard of units, you could say it’s a binge drink. Felt around my liver area, was asked to walk in a straight line, one foot in front of the other, and asked to read a sign on the wall. I was advised 3 weeks and I’ll receive my license

Fast forward until preset day. I didn’t hear anything for while. I emailed Tom as per everyone’s advice last week sometime and then on Friday last week I received my license and My cdt results which came back as 0.6%. They all came on the same day.

Any advice on car insurance?

Just have a look on usual comparison sites, they tend to be a lot cheaper than the so called "drink drive insurance specialists" well done on getting your licence back!

Of course! Don't be doing otherwise or you'll but back before Magistrates or even a Crown Court Judge for fraud if you don't!!!!

Hi

This thread seems mostly related to my circumstance, I have been waiting for my renewed medical license, I renewed on time, and got the letter stating I needed to go through the whole processes again, another drug test to prove im not on anything illegal again.

Did that in jan 2019, they lost my sample so I in fact did this twice in 2019, the process took 18 weeks from start to finish.

It has now been 26 weeks since I renewed in sept 2020 (the medical license I got in 2019 expired in sept 2020), I got a letter mentioning that the license is valid due to section 88 but as you can see it says;

So they wont say if I'm all good with this, but from my reading I am and should be covered by this section 88.

I have called the dvla a few times they simply say that its being processed and wont tell me anything else.

My car insurance is up for renewal soon, what am I meant to do with the insurnace? Given the section 88 I think it means that the license is valid and has no real impact/nothing to do and just proceed as normal letting the insurance renew like normal.

I did hire a van while it is expired and the DVLA license check clearly says it is expired, so I worry about being pulled over by the police, I worry about the insurance situation as I dont know what to do, the DVLA delays is causing me such a worry I'm scared to use my car even though I havent done anything wrong. I'm thinking its going to never go through, its going to be september in 5 months and its already been 6 months!!!

Whats more is I'm moving house so the DVLA drug test place, when they eventually get me booked in, will be in a totally different place to where I am now. I can make it there sure but still.

What can be done ?

What should I do about the insurance, just let it renew automatically and not do anything?

What happens if they havent processed my application by september?

You should have told your insurance company the details of your circumstances when you took out the policy.
This would include your drink drive conviction and you being on a one year medical licence.
Providing you have done this, you are still covered because S88 extends that medical licence for up to 12 months, as you said. Having said that, if you have any doubts about what you did disclose, you should contact your insurance company and inform them of your current status for a licence.
If you did get to September with no outcome, then your entitlement will cease, but there was a case on here last month where someone reported that, after a discussion with DVLA, they allowed him to resubmit an application and start the 12 month clock again.
You should write to DVLA, or email them on medicalsupport@dvla.gov.uk and inform them of your new address (including your personal details to ensure they attach it to the right person)

Can anyone help? In addition to being alcohol free for 12 months after a detox.. I take codeine prescribed by doctor and up until a few months ago I was on quite a high dose but have come back down (was for back pain) will this play any part in me getting my license back?

cheers

Jodie

That should not be a problem. If you take codeine, prescribed, and your GP confirms that he / she has no concerns about your driving then DVLA will be happy.
The main problem with codeine is high dosage, particularly soon after starting to take it. Once the balance of dosage v effects have stabilised then your driving should be fine.

Yeah I’ve been on them for years. I called the doctors months ago because I was concerned about the level I was taking and I’ve since come cut the amount in half. Hopefully my doctor will confirmed everything is fine, I bloody hope so anyway as I’ve already got a car on the drive waiting for this all to come to it’s end!

Was it as prescribed by your GP? Or were you just buying it over the counter. That makes a difference to the way your GP reports it.

It’s always been a prescription the codeine. I have been honest and told the doctors that I bought co-codamol a few times and took it ontop of my codeine but this was quite a while ago now and it was nothing major.

Does anyone have Tim Burtons email address ? I have email twice and it’s come back as undelivered thanks in advance

Although, in saying that when I rang them today to check a few details as I was concerned I'd prolonged the process by accident (Thankfully I hadn't). I got through on the second ring which hasn't happened in months haha!

That’s really good over the last few weeks I’ve been in for hours may try and call tomorrow my ban is due to end Friday I declared a medical condition when I reapplied that’s holding it up .. gutted as I did a drink drive course to get 3 months off with there back log it could take another 8 weeks 😡

My ban ended in June last year after doing the DD course so it could be worse! Believe me I know it's difficult to keep being patient but it'll come through for us soon, I'm sure!👌🏼
