drivers medical

Hi
new to this forum , ive just had my licence back for one year after a 3 year ban and had the medical which cost £96 , so i pusumed i passed , but i was then supprised to have a refund for both cost of the licence and the medical , seems strange to me as did i not need a medical or is dvla confused , i also have lost my grandfather rights to drive 7.5t 3.5t etc and have been informed i need to have another medical , confusing or what .
any help or info from others who have experienced this would be great
