How does a friend try to advise a person with a previous of 3 convictions from over 20 years ago and who now faces a further conviction for drink driving to get rehabilitation? What is the likelihood that the previous will be taken into account or is it spent and would rehabilitation be offered within any sentence? Any advice would be appreciated thanks.

As long as your friends convictions from over 20 years ago did not result in a custodial sentence of more that 2.5 years, they will be spent and not be taken into account when it comes to sentencing for this offence. Please see here for more information on 'The rehabilitation of offenders act'.

Your friend will almost definitely be offered a place of the drink driving rehabilitation course if convicted, based on the information you have provided.

I would say that your friend is beyond help. The only person who can help is oneself.

If your friend doesn't care about themselves then don't bother wasting your time. Anyone who gets court 4 times for drink driving should go to jail.
